Week 4 - Interview with Industry Expert

Interview with Josh Hobson:
For this assignment I chose to interview my uncle, Josh Hobson, the current Direct of Technology at Santa Monica Studios, a well-known video game development company. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from California State University, Bakersfield, and a Master’s in Engineering from Arizona State University. I chose to interview him not only because of his many accomplishments, but because I have always admired his passion for technology and his creative mind. His experiences, from graphics programming to technical leadership, offered a unique and personal perspective on what success looks like in the gaming and technology industry.

Josh shared that his career passion began when he was young. His love for working on computers sparked an early interest in the field. He explained that his fascination with computer graphics ultimately led him to specialize in rendering systems, where he focused on performance optimization. Over the years, his strong technical background and communication skills helped move him into leadership roles. He emphasized that one of the biggest challenges in his current role is balancing technical debt with the constant demand to meet project deadlines, which often requires tough prioritization and team coordination.

Josh mentioned that emerging trends like procedural content generation and AI powered tools are rapidly transforming how games are developed. He stressed that adaptability and continuing to learn are key to keeping up. As for the skills that matter the most, Josh pointed to problem solving, communication, and the ability to work well together in a team. He also encouraged students to build real-world projects, whether they are personal or collaborative, to show dedication and growth potential.

Talking with my uncle provided me with a much clearer picture of what it takes to be successful in the gaming and technology industries. Before this interview, I believed that being a strong coder was the most important path to success. However, I now see how vital the skills of being a leader, communicating, and long term thinking are. I appreciated how open he was about the struggles he faced in his role, especially about his time management and innovating under pressure. His transparency made the conversation more meaningful and gave me a realistic view of what to expect in future roles. Learning about the growing role in AI in gaming excited me, especially since that overlaps heavily with my own interests. His advice made me realize that the ability to evolve with the field is just as important as technical knowledge. This connection of graphics and AI inspires me to keep pushing myself, as it opens the door to creating more intelligent gaming experiences.

After this interview, I plan to work on improving both my technical and interpersonal skills. I will continue to build my coding portfolio, but I will also seek opportunities to collaborate on group projects that challenge my communication and teamwork skills. I want to strengthen my understanding in areas like graphics programming and machine learning, since both are critical in modern game development. To push myself even further, I will look into internships and open-source contributions, where I can apply what I have learned in real-world scenarios and gain mentorship from experienced developers. Additionally, I will strive to work on improving my communication skills so that I am prepared for leadership roles in the future. Josh’s journey showed me that long term success branches from combining skill and adaptability. This interview confirmed that success is about more than mastering one skill, it is about combining technical depth with emotional intelligence, resilience, and a drive to keep learning. I now feel more confident in my ability to navigate this path, and I am excited to keep growing both personally and professionally.
